Here is a brief outline:
- Ensure that it is a working day: This is to ensure that there is long queue to make lining up more frustrating.
- Don't bring any identification with you, so its harder for you to claim back your ATM card.
- Be curious about your account balance, after lining up for half an hour to pay a small bill, so that you will use the ATM machine.
- Timing is utmost importance, wait until the ATM machine starts its daily backup routine at a few minutes past 9AM (Beijing Time). Of course, you wouldn't know if it is really happening, because there are no warnings in the first place.
- Insert your ATM card before the backup routine ends and watch it get eaten by the ATM machine.
- Remember not to wait until the ATM machine informs you to insert your ATM card. It must be before that. If you lose that time window, you will probably have to wait the next day. I am not sure when is their next backup interval. Does anyone out there have that information?
Other prerequisites: It is possible that some ATM machines might have better setup that prevents you to do this, so recommended solution is to open a bank account in ICBC bank. Their ATM machines seems to use Microsoft Windows XP (WinXP) and their backup software runs in a DOS command prompt inside WinXP. It was quite fun watching the backup script run.
Unrelated thoughts: I remember that the RHB Bank/Maybank ATM Machines back in Malaysia runs on WinNT. ![]()
